For the second time in three weeks the first team prevailed in a penalty shootout as they edged out Raheny United in the Polikoff Cup first round on Friday night.
Balscadden made a great start under the lights in St Anne's Park. Luke Kimmage continued his brilliant form as he raced on to a Ger Sweetman pass in the seventh minute before bursting past the full-back, cutting inside and smashing home a terrific goal.
Luke and Ger then combined again, with Luke's cross evading everyone and drifting into the net.
Raheny responded and pulled one back before half-time but Balscadden kicked on again in the second half as they looked to kill the tie.
A dogged defensive display looked to have done the job but Raheny levelled in the 95th minute to force extra time.
The teams couldn't be separated in the extra 30 minutes, and so we went to penalties. Paddy Coates, Luke Kimmage, Ciaran Murtagh and Ger Sweetman all scored, with Rob Murray pulling off two crucial saves to win us the match and send us into the second round.
